Desert Horizons Country Club opened in 1979 with an 18-hole Ted Robinson course, and it has spent the past decade reinventing itself. Members funded a golf renovation guided by Clive Clark, and a remodeled 40,000-square-foot clubhouse opened in 2024 with a new fitness center and courts pavilion. The community is member-owned and gated, with 520 homes ranging from paired condominiums to custom estates. It suits buyers who want a lively, approachable club with modern amenities at a more accessible price point than the larger Indian Wells clubs.

The golf

Ted Robinson, the architect behind many desert courses, designed Desert Horizons, and he later lived beside its 14th fairway for more than a decade. The course opened in 1979. Starting in the summer of 2016, members funded a renovation of about $2 million through voluntary contributions, guided by Clive Clark. Every green complex was rebuilt with modern drainage and new putting surfaces, fairway bunkers were reworked, a new set of forward tees was added and about 120,000 square feet of turf became low-water landscaping. The course now plays from about 4,500 yards to just over 6,600 from the back tees, so it suits a wide range of players. The golf is limited to members and their guests.

Clubhouse and amenities

The remodeled clubhouse, which celebrated its grand opening in April 2024, covers about 40,000 square feet and added a two-story building to the original. It includes a main dining room with panoramic views, The Grille and Terrace Bar for casual meals, private dining and event spaces, card rooms and a pro shop. The Fitness and Wellness Center covers about 8,380 square feet and offers personal training, yoga, Pilates and TRX. The new Courts Pavilion has 11 pickleball courts and two lighted tennis courts with spectator seating, and ten pools are spread through the neighborhoods.

Membership

Desert Horizons is a private, member-owned club. It offers tiered golf memberships, a social membership and temporary guest privileges for people getting to know the club. Local real estate guides describe social and fitness access as bundled into the homeowners dues, with golf a separate, optional membership, but terms can change and differ by property, so confirm them with the club before you buy. Fees are set by the club and shared through its membership director. The club has long limited the size of its membership, so the course rarely feels crowded.

Homes and neighborhoods

The community has 520 residences in three types. The largest group is 288 paired condominiums, attached in twos, which offer single-family living with less upkeep and are popular with seasonal owners. There are 210 single-family homes, and 22 custom estates along the fairways sit at the top of the market. Local real estate guides put recent sales between the mid six figures and the high one millions, which makes Desert Horizons one of the more accessible private clubs in Indian Wells. An onsite real estate office handles many sales.

Life at the club

Desert Horizons feels neighborly and active. About 35 percent of homeowners live here year-round, a higher share than many desert clubs, so the community stays lively beyond the winter season. Pickleball is a major draw, and the social clubs, bocce and dinners give newcomers plenty of ways to meet people. The location north of Highway 111 puts the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, home of the BNP Paribas Open each March, a few minutes away, along with the shops and restaurants of Highway 111 and El Paseo. For many buyers, that mix of convenience and value is the draw.
