Thunderbird Country Club opened on January 9, 1951, on the site of a former dude ranch, and gave the Coachella Valley its first 18-hole golf course. It went on to host the 1955 Ryder Cup and the tournament that became today's desert PGA Tour event, and it drew Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and several presidents as members and guests. The course was restored by Tripp Davis in 2021 and 2022. Membership is by invitation, and the club is ringed by midcentury and contemporary homes. It suits buyers who value history, a single classic course and a central Rancho Mirage address.

The golf

Thunderbird is the oldest 18-hole course in the Coachella Valley. Golf course architect Lawrence Hughes and club president Johnny Dawson, a leading amateur, hit the ceremonial first balls on January 9, 1951. Today the course plays to a par 71 of 6,755 yards. In 1955 it hosted the Ryder Cup, played on November 5 and 6 with par reset to 72 and the course stretched to 6,600 yards. Chick Harbert's American team, with Sam Snead, Cary Middlecoff and Tommy Bolt, beat Dai Rees's Great Britain side 8 to 4. The Thunderbird Invitational ran here from 1952 to 1959, with Jimmy Demaret winning three times and Arnold Palmer taking the last one, and it led directly to the Desert Classic, now The American Express. After only minor work by Ted Robinson in 1980, architect Tripp Davis carried out a $6.5 million restoration in 2021 and 2022, rebuilding greens and bunkers on all 18 holes.

A club with a famous past

Thunderbird began as a dude ranch. In 1946 Frank Bogert turned 663 acres into Thunderbird Ranch, and Johnny Dawson later bought it to build the desert's first 18-hole course. Early investors included Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Randolph Scott, Leonard Firestone, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Club lore is rich. Associate pro Eddie Susalla adapted a three-wheeled vehicle for golf in 1951, which the club credits as an early golf cart. Member Ernest Breech, chairman of Ford, asked permission to borrow the club's name for a new sports car, and the first Ford Thunderbird was presented to the club in October 1955. Dwight Eisenhower became a member in 1961, Gerald Ford built a home on the 13th hole in 1975, and Barack Obama has played the course.

Clubhouse and amenities

The clubhouse sits on Country Club Drive, with views of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains that make it a natural setting for parties and dinners. Tennis and pickleball are based at a separate Racquets Club on Highway 111, and the club also offers a wellness program alongside golf. Thunderbird has been ranked among the top 150 country clubs in America by Platinum Clubs of America. The scale is deliberately modest compared with the newer resort-style clubs in the valley: one course, a traditional clubhouse and a social calendar built around golf, dining and long-standing friendships rather than a sprawling list of amenities.

Membership

Membership at Thunderbird is by member invitation only, and the club directs inquiries to its Director of Member Relations. It does not publish categories, initiation fees or dues on its website, so prospective members usually start by getting to know current members. Club membership is separate from owning a home nearby, and owning a house on the fairway does not make you a member. Some fairway listings note that bringing a golf cart onto the course requires membership. Buyers who hope to join should ask early about the process, since an invitation cannot be bought along with a house.

Homes and neighborhoods

Thunderbird has been called the country's first real estate golf community, and it was an early adopter of underground residential utilities in the 1950s. Architect William Cody, who led the conversion of the ranch into the club in 1950, went on to design more than a dozen private homes and several multi-unit communities in and around Thunderbird, and many original midcentury houses survive along the fairways. Around the course are distinct enclaves. Thunderbird Heights, a guard-gated hillside neighborhood created in the 1950s, mixes original homes with contemporary rebuilds and has panoramic view sites. Thunderbird Cove, developed in the 1970s with notable work by designer Steve Chase, is known for large custom homes. The book Mod Mirage documents many of these houses.
