Ironwood Country Club spreads across about 800 acres in south Palm Desert, tucked against the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Established in 1974, it has two 18-hole courses, a large clubhouse, a busy racquet center and more than 1,000 residences in 13 homeowner associations. Club membership is separate from owning a home, which gives buyers a wide range of choices, from golf-course condos to custom estates with valley views. It suits people who want a sociable, established club with real variety in housing and price, a short drive from El Paseo.

The golf

Ironwood is one of the few clubs in Palm Desert with two full 18-hole courses. Desmond Muirhead laid out the original design in the 1970s, with Arnold Palmer consulting, and Ted Robinson worked on the courses in 1977. The South course is the championship test, a par 72 that stretches from 4,773 to 7,274 yards and hosts a U.S. Open qualifying round every year. A desert wash cuts through the property, and the South crosses it to reach a set of outlying holes. The North course is a par 71 of 4,566 to 6,212 yards that the club calls a shotmaker's course, shorter and walkable but demanding on accuracy. Architect John Fought, who has a long history with Ironwood, has led recent updates, including bunker work on both courses and a renovation reported in 2025.

Clubhouse and amenities

The clubhouse covers about 50,000 square feet, and its bistro and bar were being remodeled in 2025 to add a 360-degree central bar, a wine wall and an outdoor trellis. Racquet sports are a real strength. The sports center has nine tennis courts built to USTA, ATP and WTA standards, ten pickleball courts and POP tennis, along with bocce. The Ironwood Wellness Center offers group classes, equipment and spa services such as massage. Beyond the usual golf and racquet events, members join smaller groups the club calls clubs within the club, including the Artists of Ironwood, a bridge club, cycling and hiking clubs, and the Ironwood Uncorked wine club.

Membership

Ironwood offers several paths in. A Regular Proprietary Golf membership includes full play on both courses, the practice facilities and all club amenities. An Executive Golf membership, for members 55 and under and limited in number, carries dues at half the regular golf rate until the member reaches the age limit, when it converts to a regular golf membership. A Social membership covers the clubhouse, racquet and wellness facilities with limited golf, up to six rounds in season. Memberships include a spouse or partner and children under 23. A Special Guest Program lets prospective members try the club for one to three months. The club does not publish its fees online, and current terms are shared by the membership office.

Homes and neighborhoods

Ironwood's housing is unusually varied for a private club. More than 1,000 residences sit in 13 homeowner associations, mixing golf-course condominiums, attached homes, single-family homes and custom estates, with the last area of development, Canyon View Estates, set aside for custom estate homesites. Many homes look out over the fairways toward the valley, and the higher streets against the mountains look out across the valley. Because club membership is separate from home ownership, buyers can choose a home first and decide on membership afterward, and the range of HOAs means monthly fees and rules differ from one neighborhood to the next.

Life at the club

Ironwood has the feel of a long-established community, with homes used as primary residences, weekend getaways and vacation homes, and a steady calendar of golf, racquet and social events. The club states its aim as an activity-rich golf course community, and the interest groups give newcomers an easy way to meet people beyond the first tee. The setting is quiet and green, with the Santa Rosa foothills close enough that the club has its own hiking group, yet El Paseo's shops and restaurants and the rest of central Palm Desert are a short drive away.
