The Hideaway is a guard-gated golf community in south La Quinta built around two private 18-hole courses, one by Pete Dye and one by Clive Clark. Discovery Land Company completed the project in the 2000s, and in 2021 the club passed to its members as a private equity club. Its 434 residences range from villas and bungalows to custom estates. The club describes itself as social and family-friendly, and it suits buyers who want serious golf without a hushed atmosphere, with plenty for children, grandchildren and non-golfers to do.

The golf

The Hideaway has two par 72 courses with very different personalities. The Pete Dye course, completed in 2001, was the first on the property: a links-inspired layout of rolling fairways edged by native grasses, where sand or water starts or finishes most holes. Course architect Tim Liddy restored its greens and bunkers in 2024 and added Dye-style railroad tie bunkers. The Clive Clark course draws on Clark's British Isles background but trades heather for cascading water features and desert wildflowers, with broad greens at the end of gently rolling fairways. Both courses share a double-ended driving range, an 11,000 square foot putting green, a new short game area and a performance studio with TrackMan for lessons and club fitting.

Clubhouse and amenities

The clubhouse covers about 80,000 square feet, and it has just come through a major renovation. The club reports that the project cost nearly $50 million, started in May 2024 and opened in phases, with the final areas finished in January 2026. It added a new spa and fitness center, a main bar, a golf shop and a poolside restaurant and bar with indoor and outdoor seating, and it refreshed the dining rooms and locker rooms. Outside, the pickleball courts were expanded, new tennis courts were added and bocce courts now sit beside the pool restaurant. Both practice ranges were improved, and each course received new greens and irrigation.

Membership

The Hideaway converted from developer ownership to a private equity, member-owned club on June 1, 2021. Equity golf membership is capped at 450 members, which the club frames as 225 members for each 18-hole course, a ratio that keeps tee sheets relatively open. Full privileges extend to a spouse or partner and to unmarried children under 31, with extended family benefits for older children and their families. Membership is handled separately from buying a home and is subject to club approval, and local listings note that a social membership is available to property owners. The club does not publish its initiation fee or dues; inquiries go through the membership director.

Homes and neighborhoods

The club counts 434 residences, and real estate here comes in four broad types. The villas, offered in four floor plans with Spanish and Mediterranean detailing, line the fairways of the Clive Clark course and look south to the Santa Rosa Mountains. The bungalows form a small village a short walk from the clubhouse, each with a private courtyard, which makes them popular as lock-and-leave seasonal homes. Custom residences by established desert builders range from classic Spanish to contemporary Santa Barbara designs. Custom homesites run from about one third to more than half an acre, many on the fairways, and the club notes that only a handful remain.

Life at the club

The Hideaway leans social. The club calls itself the most social and family-oriented member-owned club in the Coachella Valley, and the calendar reflects that, with poolside dining, bocce leagues and family events alongside member golf. The gate is about 18 miles from Palm Springs International Airport and about six miles from Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport in Thermal, which handles private aircraft. Old Town La Quinta, the La Quinta Resort and the shopping on Highway 111 are a short drive away. Many owners use their homes seasonally, and the bungalows and villas suit buyers who want to lock up and leave between visits.

Questions

Is The Hideaway in La Quinta private?

Yes. The Hideaway is a guard-gated community with a private, member-owned equity golf club. Both courses are for members and their guests, and membership is subject to club approval.

How much is a membership at The Hideaway?

The club does not publish its fees and shares them during the membership process. At least one local brokerage guide has listed an equity golf membership around $150,000, but treat any third-party figure as a starting point and confirm current terms with the membership director.

Do you have to be a member to buy a home at The Hideaway?

Membership is sold separately from the property and is subject to club approval, so buying a home does not automatically make you a member. Local listings note that a social membership is open to property owners.

Who designed the golf courses at The Hideaway?

Pete Dye designed the first course, completed in 2001, and Clive Clark designed the second. Tim Liddy restored the Dye course's greens and bunkers in 2024 as part of a club-wide renovation.

What is the difference between The Hideaway and The Madison Club?

Both were developed by Discovery Land Company, but The Hideaway is larger and more family-oriented, with two courses, 434 homes and a member-owned equity club. The Madison Club has one Tom Fazio course, larger homesites and a much smaller, invitation-only membership.
